New is use of electrostimulation for treatment of dysphagia (swallowing disorders).

Machine name: VitalStim® Plus

Information:

VitalStim therapy has been successfully used by clinical speech therapists in hospitals, rehabilitation institutions, as well as private specialized clinics for dysphagia treatment and partially for speech disorders (80% dysphagia - 20% speech disorder) over a long period of time and worldwide.

VitalStim therapy is appropriate for adults i children patients and considerably shifts treatment options for dysphagia following standard practices.

A variety of verified clinical records and investigations are available for VitalStim therapy.

Dysphagia patients who have suffered stroke or head traumaarethe most frequently affected. Further use is found in patients where dysphagia is caused by Parkinson's disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Principle VitalStim therapy:

VitalStim therapy is a specialized form of neuromuscular electrical stimulation designed to treat dysphagia via muscle re-education. A small, carefully calibrated current is delivered to the muscles of the neck or face using specially designed electrodes. The current stimulates the motor nerves in the throat while the patient tries to induce swallowing and muscle contraction. Electrostimulation can also be applied at the sensory level inducing cortical reorganisation.

With repeated VitalStim therapy, muscles are re-educated and the ability of swallowing function visibly improves.
